The Bulldogs have lost tackling-machine David Stagg with a shoulder injury, the club opting to send the representative back-rower in for reconstructive surgery early to ensure he's ready for 2011 pre-season training. Dene Halatau also goes out of the side that beat the Cowboys last weekend. The Panthers got back to winning ways by thrashing the Rabbitohs last time out and Matthew Elliott has stuck with the same side. Fullback Lachlan Coote (Osteitis pubis) and prop Tim Grant (ankle) are still on the sidelines and are no certainties to return for the finals.

Watch Live >> Click Here

The Bulldogs showed plenty of fight by coming from 14 points down late in last Saturday's clash with North Queensland to steal a gritty 22-20 win. While it was only against the struggling Cowboys they showed enough in those frantic last 10 minutes to suggest they should have delivered much more this season if they could have been more consistent, much to the frustration of coach Kevin Moore and their fans. The Panthers ended a worrying run of just one win in six games with their flogging of South Sydney last weekend. Only a similar type of display against the Bulldogs will confirm they have turned the corner heading into the finals.

While they probably won't come face-to-face too much during the 80 minutes, this match is all about the battle of the fullbacks. In the blue corner there's Bulldogs No.1 Luke Patten, who will play his last home match on Monday night for the club he joined way back in 2001. 'The General', who is off to the English Super League next season, has been a great servant for the club and his experience and security at the back will be vital in this encounter. Over in the black corner is winger-come-fullback Michael Gordon. It was supposed to be all doom and gloom for the mountain men when Coote succumbed to injury but in Gordon, Elliott has found a more than handy replacement. The Blues winger led the charge against the Bunnies with 30 points last weekend and he has seemed to go to another level since re-signing with the club last month.

While the Bulldogs are already thinking about their end of season trip, this match probably means more to them than the Panthers who have their finals spot all sewn up. Club heroes Patten and halfback Brett Kimmorley (retiring) are playing their last match in front of their home fans which should ensure the Blue and Whites play with plenty of commitment and emotion for the 80 minutes. Most of the stats point to a victory for the visitors, the Panthers having won seven of the last 10 matches between the two sides, while the Dogs have won only one of their last five at ANZ Stadium. But the Bulldogs have already had one victory over the Panthers this week, snaring Kiwi international Frank Pritchard from Penrith for the next three years, and I can see them having more joy on Monday night.

Mitchell Pearce is aiming to secure a finals spot this Sunday at the expense of good mate and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles half Kieran Foran.

The Tricolours halfback knows the two competition points that have eluded his side for the past three weeks is all that is between them and a top eight finish.Their opponents are level with them on 28 competition points along with the New Zealand Warriors, followed one win behind by the Brisbane Broncos and Canberra Raiders.

Their recent run of outs will be end this weekend at the Sydney Football Stadium if the playmaker has anything to do with it. Pearce played a leading role in the last round loss to the Gold Coast Titans, laying on two try assists and making some good defensive plays.

However, he is first to admit there is room for improvement ahead of the clash against a desperate Manly side. Knowing a win will secure their finals birth and derail the run of Australian Schoolboys teammate Foran has the representative half ready for a tough battle.

The young Sea Eagles pivots will be charged with snatching a win away from home but the extra incentive has Pearce primed to spoil the party.

New Zealand have wrapped up the Bledisloe Cup and the Tri Nations trophy, but don't mention the term "dead rubber" to the Wallabies as they prepare for Saturday's Test against the Springboks in Pretoria.

Watch Live Click Here

Both teams have plenty to play for as they try to bounce back from hard-fought losses to the All Blacks. The Springboks are hoping to break a run of four losses in this year's tournament, and Australia are desperate for a win to take some heat off the team and the coaching staff. More importantly, the Wallabies have to start winning on the road, which is exactly what they’ll have to do if they’re to win the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

If they are successful on this trip, they’ll break a 47-year drought at altitude. Australia have lost 11 successive Tests in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein since John Thornett’s Wallabies won on the high veldt in 1963.

It’s a big ask, but the All Blacks proved last weekend that it’s not impossible. Visiting teams are expected to wilt at altitude, but Richie McCaw and his men played the full 80 minutes and came away with a come-from-behind victory to clinch the Tri Nations trophy. The Wallabies watched the Test on television at their Cape Town hotel, and they would have been impressed with the physicality from both sides.

I couldn’t help thinking while watching the match that the Wallabies must find some more mongrel if they are to keep South Africa winless in the Tri Nations. The Boks will be even more desperate this week. The Wallabies welcome Quade Copper back into the side, and the classy fly half will ask plenty of questions of the Boks’ defence providing the forwards gain parity up front.

The Boks are going to have to keep a close eye on him, and that will hopefully give those inside and outside him more room to move. I just hope all the talk about where Cooper’s future lies hasn’t put too much pressure on him.

Warrington Wolves will going all out to retain their Challenge Cup title when they face the Leeds Rhinos at Wembley on Saturday.

Click Here To Watch live Online

The Carnegie Challenge Cup Final should be an entertaining encounter between two very exciting sides and this tie could quite possibly go down to the last second and even possibly a replay. The Wolves booked their place in the Wembley final with a convincing 54-12 win over a poor Catalans Dragons side, while the Rhinos had to come from behind to defeat St Helens 32-28 in the semi-finals.

The most prestigious award in a Challenge Cup Final is the Lance Todd Trophy, which is awarded for the man of the match, and Warrington’s Lee Briers and Leeds’ Danny McGuire are the favourites with Ladbrokes . Michael Monaghan is to win back-to-back awards for the Wolves, while Rob Burrow is a good.

Forget everything that’s gone before in 2010 – this game looms as the most important to date for both sides. The 11th-placed Knights need to win – and win well – if they’re to keep their finals dream alive heading into Round 26, while the Dragons need a confidence boost having surrendered 32 second-half points to the rampant Raiders in Canberra last week.

Watch Now Live Online >> Click Here

With a points differential of -32, the Knights probably need to ‘do a Canberra’ on the Dragons this week to whittle away their deficit. Granted, they need a bunch of other results to fall their way but they do have a degree of control over their destiny.

And given it’s the annual ‘Old Boys’ game – played in front of proud past Knights – expect EnergyAustralia Stadium to be packed to the rafters. Riding a wave of emotion, there should be no shortage of effort from the home team.

Meanwhile the Dragons need to dust themselves off and refocus on the prize. Last week’s loss was their fourth from their past seven games, and another loss here will render their excellent back-to-back wins over the Roosters and Sea Eagles but a distant memory.

Incredibly, should they lose here and the Titans and Wests Tigers win, there will be three-way tie for the minor premiership heading into Round 26 – although the Dragons are guaranteed to retain top stop on differential even with a loss here. (BUT… hypothesising further, should the Dragons then lose to the Rabbitohs in Round 26, the winner of the Titans v Tigers game in Round 26 would then claim the minor premiership. The Dragons are guaranteed second place at worst… notwithstanding two closing wins by the Panthers by massive margins.)

Personnel-wise, the Knights have retained the 17 that put the Broncos to the sword at home last week in an eight-tries-to-three demolition, with captain Kurt Gidley in the no.7 again and the impressive Shannon McDonnell holding down the custodian’s role.

Meanwhile the Dragons have some changes that see them back to full-strength. Beau Scott, given last week off to freshen up, returns in the back row, pushing Ricky Thorby out of the squad. And Jeremy Smith – a late withdrawal (NRL.com hears for disciplinary reasons), returns at lock, pushing Nick Emmett to the extended bench that includes Luke Priddis who was overlooked last week.

Well, here it is. The absolutely final throw of the dice for two of the teams at the very bottom echelon of the finals equations. Of course, even a win here followed by another in Round 26 no longer guarantees either of these teams a shot at finals glory.

Watch Now Live Online >> Click Here

They’ll still need a bucketful of other results to go their way with the Broncos, Raiders and Knights all involved in a bottom-of-the-eight stoush and even the Warriors, Eagles and Roosters still in doubt. You’d almost need a Harvard degree in theoretical physics to understand every permutation possible over the next two rounds but for the Eels and Rabbitohs the immediate equation is blindingly simple – win here or start making plans for 2011.

Parramatta have the added hurdle of a poor for-and-against, which means even if they win back-to-back matches AND get the other results they need, they still have to overcome the points differential of teams ahead of them. They have a slightly more favourable (but by no means easy) Round 26 match-up at home to the Warriors, whereas Souths travel to WIN Jubilee to face the top-of-the-table Dragons.

The Bunnies could be forgiven for thinking the football gods haven’t been in their corner in 2010, as injuries to key players at crucial times cruelled their chances. The absence of John Sutton, David Taylor and co. was felt keenly last week as the Bunnies capitulated against a Panthers outfit that had won just one of their previous six games – and it doesn’t get much better this week as Souths undergo a major reshuffle.

Eddy Pettybourne has taken the early guilty plea and accepted a one-match ban for a careless high tackle, although Dave Taylor returns from a broken collarbone as a direct swap in the back row. Dylan Farrell moves into the starting side for centre Beau Champion who broke his leg against Penrith, with Jamie Simpson joining the bench. Jason Clark starts at lock, Sam Burgess moves to prop and Jaiman Lowe goes to the bench.

After sleeping their way through the first 60 minutes last week the Eels finished all over a Tigers outfit that should have been ahead by a lot more than four points at half time. You’d have been very brave to bet against an Eels win had the game gone to golden point but Luke Burt’s amazing missed penalty shot in the final minute allowed the Tigers to escape with the win.

It’s a cruel blow for a man who is legendary among the Parramatta faithful for his cool head under pressure. When you think Luke Burt, you think a calmly slotted field goal in the dying seconds or a sideline conversion drilled over the black dot to win a game. We may never know what caused Parramatta’s ‘Mr Reliable’ to skew a shot he would normally tap over blindfolded but Burt and the Eels will need to get back on the horse for one more tilt at an unlikely finals berth.

They will have the services of Ben Smith for this match after he returns from a two-match ban following an unsuccessful challenge against a dangerous contact charge, pushing Justin Horo back to the bench and Taniela Lasalo out of the side. Daniel Mortimer should be well rested by now for his return at five eighth with Kris Keating moving to halfback to cover for Jeff Robson who is out with a knee injury.

Two words; Darren Lockyer. The Broncos skipper has been the focal point in the lead up to this high-stakes clash. Word is he won't travel to Auckland because of the rib cartilage injury suffered 19 days ago, but with their season on the line, no one would be surprised to see the legend run out on Friday. The Warriors are without 'the rock', Micheal Luck, who is out with a nasty leg gash and departing hooker Ian Henderson is sidelined with an ankle injury.

Watch Now Live Online >> Click Here

The visitors are not in form, losing to Parramatta and then being thumped 44-18 by Newcastle has them in danger of missing the finals for the first time in 19 years. The Warriors, on the other hand, are building. A 22-10 win over the Knights was followed with a 16-19 defeat to Manly, a game where they will rue not taking a late field goal.

Future Kiwi Josh Hoffman has been a revelation at fullback for the Broncos, but their most destructive player is lock Sam Thaiday, who is almost unstoppable when cutting back on the angle close to the line. For the Warriors, Manu Vatuvei was quite against T-Rex last week and will have his hands full trying to contain Israel Folau. Look out for back-rower Lewis Brown, who will be fresh after missing last week with a shoulder injury, as well as dangerous wing Kevin Locke and replacement hooker Alehana Mara in his second NRL match.

It's well known the Broncos struggle without Lockyer. Corey Norman, 19, has a huge task to lead his side around in front of what should be close to a capacity crowd. The Warriors are highly motivated. It's centre Brent Tate's last match in Auckland and prop Sam Rapira's 100th game for the club while they know a win assures a top eight spot. Warriors by 10, but anything is possible if Folau flies.

Monday night football brings us a cracking finish to the round as these two sides look to turn their finals berths (Titans certain, Roosters still a teeny chance of missing out) into top-four positions.

Watch Roosters vs Titans Live Match >> Click Here

The Titans have even higher aspirations, as they currently sit in second place and while the chances of catching the Dragons for the minor premiership are slim, they are in a differential dogfight with the Wests Tigers for the second rung on the ladder – and with it, a certain second bite of the cherry in finals football.

Three wins from three would mean only the Tigers, doing the same but by better margins (they are currently just one differential point behind), could rob them. Even still, just two more wins would probably secure a top-four spot and a home final.

On the other side of the coin a loss here for the Gold Coast could see them slide to sixth – and heading towards the danger end of the top eight. Greg Bird and Michael Henderson have been added to the bench for this clash after last week’s win over North Queensland, with Aaron Cannings out.

The Roosters had a slip-up against the Sharks last week, putting their top-two chances in jeopardy, but they can still grab the coveted spot should they prove triumphant over the next three weeks.

At the very least, currently in fifth, the Roosters know a win here will put them into the top four as it will ensure they leapfrog the Titans.

Another loss, however, could put them back as far as seventh and fighting for their survival in the final rounds with games to come against the Sea Eagles and Cowboys. Mitchell Aubusson is due back from injury in the centres, meaning Johnathan Ford will miss out, while Lopini Paea has been added as an extra on the bench.

The Titans can equal their NRL record of five consecutive wins with a victory.

When you take out the rubbish this weekend, don’t forget to pick up the kitty litter on the way out. In the latest instalment of the “Battle of the Cats” this Sunday, one team will have found their much-needed growl after the 80 minutes – not to mention cementing their spot in top four – while the other… well, someone’s going to have clean that mess up!

Don’t be fooled by their current standings. Both teams might share second spot on the ladder, but fans from either side must feel like their side is scrapping for bottom eight spoils, rather than a home semi-final.

Despite an impressive opening half in the nation’s capital last Monday, the Panthers must’ve left the stadium early mentally – because they somehow gave up a 26-12 lead and were shut out in the second stanza. The 30-26 disappointment was their fourth loss in five games and it’s safe to say that the State of Origin break was the worst thing to happen for Penrith’s season.

We know all about the freezing temperatures in the nation’s capital, but there’s one Canberra resident whose temperature might have reached boiling point last week: David Furner.

The Raiders’ coach was furious after his team’s 36-12 loss to the Storm – labelling the performance “probably our worst game this season and definitely the worst second half” – as their 2010 campaign went from life support to almost lifeless with just over a month of the year to play. With that in mind, it’s little wonder the Raiders’ legend has rolled the dice and rushed back big names Alan Tongue and Josh Dugan – as well as rising star Shaun Fensom – for this week’s must-win clash against the Panthers.

Raiders v Panthers
Canberra Stadium
9 th Aug, Monday, 7pm ( AUT Time)

Currently sitting in 12th spot and four points adrift of the top eight, a loss in the “comfort” of their cold home will just about end what would be another season of lost opportunities.

In stark contrast, the mountain men have only just found their heartbeat themselves, snatching a much-needed, last-gasp 24-16 victory over the lowly Cowboys last Friday.

Penrith’s premiership credentials had taken a serious battering leading up to the game, with Matt Elliott’s men having lost their previous three matches. But after keeping their second spot (at least for a week), and the Dragons conceding defeat to the Broncos last Sunday, they’re now back in contention – along with the Roosters and Tigers – to take out the minor premiership. (Thus, it should be pointed out that the Panthers have won the competition each time they’ve finished the regular season on top of the ladder, in 1991 and ’03.

Matthew Bell gets another start in the run-on team this week, while veteran prop Frank Puletua and young Sandor Earl have been an added to form an extended bench.

Saturday 7th August 2010 Peacock hopes to end Cup woes England captain Jamie Peacock is hoping his Leeds team-mates can transfer the Indian sign they have over St Helens in Grand Finals into the Challenge Cup when they meet in Saturday's first semi-final. While the Rhinos have enjoyed the better of their Super League showdowns, with three consecutive Old Trafford triumphs, Saints have dominated their Challenge Cup clashes, with five wins from their last six meetings, three of them semi-finals, and it is 11 years since Leeds last lifted the famous knockout trophy. Currently lying fifth in the League after an indifferent season by their own standards, the Cup probably represents the Yorkshire club's best chance of silverware and Peacock acknowledges that the next few weeks will be crucial in their bid to land the elusive double.

"We need to get back to being able to win big games," he said. "For us it's like play-off football all the time now. "There is nothing for losing this week and the week after we need to beat Cas to stay in fourth or fifth and it's like that every week. Realistically, we've got six to eight weeks of must-win football. "The Challenge Cup probably holds a special place for St Helens, who have been very successful in it and you grow an affection for it.

Hopefully we'll be able to turn it around on Saturday. "The last time we played St Helens in the Cup we were probably over-cooked as a team. "We were struggling a bit for form and probably built the game up to be too big an occasion. Hopefully we'll be a bit more relaxed going into this game." Leeds will be without second rower Carl Ablett, who lost his appeal against a three-match suspension, as well as injured back row forwards Ali Lauitiiti and Greg Eastwood but coach Brian McClennan is able to recall second rower Ian Kirke, centre Lee Smith and hooker Matt Diskin, who all missed last Friday's League defeat by Wigan. Diskin, one of five survivors from the Leeds team that gained a famous extra-time win over Saints in the 2003 semi-final at the Galpharm Stadium, is poised to make his first appearance since June after recovering from a groin injury.

Saints coach Mick Potter, coming to the end of his two-year stint at the helm at Knowsley Road, is in danger of becoming the first Saints coach to fail to pick up silverware in the summer era. Shaun McRae did the double at the start of Super League in 1996, successor Ellery Hanley won the 1999 Grand Final, Ian Millward lifted five major trophies in five years and Daniel Anderson guided the team to three consecutive Cup final victories before leaving in 2008. In Potter's first season St Helens failed for the first time for six years to lift a trophy but the unflappable Australian remains unconcerned, knowing that he still has two chances to put the record straight. "Trophies are something the club are really big on," admitted Potter, who will take over at Bradford next season. "Everyone loves to win and I would love to leave St Helens at the end of the year with some silverware. But whatever will happen, will happen. "I don't need any extra motivation. I play to win whatever the game is and so does everyone here. We've got a top quality group of players and there's an expectation to win things. That's as it should be. "It will be out of my control once the players get out there. I know the players will give their all and we're very hopeful, very optimistic and very determined. We've a chance." Jonny Lomax returns from injury, along with veteran Australian centre Matt Gidley, to Saints' 19-man squad for the game at Huddersfield.

Yet should New Zealand triumph against Australia in Christchurch on Saturday, by more than seven points and scoring four tries, even the most abstract of mathematicians would not be able to find a formula by which New Zealand could not win the Tri-Nations title.

It's more a quirk of the schedule than a flaw which allows this year's tournament to be done and dusted by this point: last year South Africa had also played all their home matches and had one hand on the trophy, but then they were clearly the strongest team. This year, New Zealand are in the same boat: the best team but also with the smoothest ride.

Anyway, it's not going to happen this weekend, the real question is whether New Zealand will actually tie up the title or not. Australia will come with guns blazing, but a couple of selections hint already at a longer-term agenda. Anthony Faingaa is a long-term possibility at centre, but if Robbie Deans was really seeking a salvage of the Tri-Nations hopes would he really blood a rookie opposite the polished jewel that is Ma'a Nonu?

http://rugbystreams.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/WallabiesAllBlacks.sflb_.jpg

Deans himself this week even admitted that one eye was on the future, saying: "Regardless of the outcome at the weekend, there's no doubt that this time will serve this group well. I can tell you that in 14 months, they'll be there (peaking)."

Time will indeed tell as well as serve, just as it will with Graham Henry's All Blacks. They are in magnificent form right now, unstoppable, a yard ahead of all the rest, light-years advanced tactically, blah blah blah... time will tell if they can sustain this all the way this time or whether indeed their current form is a product of an intricate plot by match officials to ensure New Zealand look good heading into the World Cup.

Peaking too early is the only concern in the New Zealand camp right now though, for everything else is flawless. The ball retention has been absolutely wonderful and it is frighteningly fast how quickly into shape the defence gets. Those who would accuse the ABs of cheating might want to go back to their videos and note just how well they get to the breakdown and in how many numbers. Even if they are not always in the right, the team is generally so overwhelmingly 'there' that referees are likely swayed.

The ultimate referee swaying test is undoubtedly Jonathan Kaplan, who takes charge of this weekend's game in Christchurch. But even his icy approach and the predicted miserable weather will not dampen down the fire with which the All Blacks will tear into this one and scorch to another Tri-Nations title.

Fortify the castle, ready the steeds, polish the armour, sharpen the swords – the Knights are in the battle of their lives as they fight sudden death from here on in.

Knights v Sea Eagles

EnergyAustralia Stadium
2nd Aug, 2010, Monday 7 pm

While five wins from the final six games would get the Newcastle side to the magic number of 28 competition points, the tightness of the competition and their poor differential means they really need to hit 30 to be certain of a spot in the post-season – and that means six from six, starting here at their castle, in front of what they hope will be a sell-out of their loyal subjects.

It stands to reason this game would be against Manly – a bitter rival; the rich Sydneysiders versus the working class, coal-mining Novocastrians. It shapes as a cracking end to the week of football, just like last round. Newcastle fans have always been passionate and vocal but if ever the side needed your voice and your support it is now. They enter the contest on the back of a golden-point loss to North Queensland, a stabbing blow to the guts, but with their heart still ticking they won’t die wondering.

Currently in 12th, a win this week could lift them to 11th while a loss could drop them to 13th… and into the moat to drown. Ben Rogers and James McManus have succumbed to injury, forcing the team into a reshuffle. Jarrod Mullen moves from half to five-eighth, Kurt Gidley moves up from fullback to halfback and Shannon McDonnell comes into the side at the back. Adam MacDougall returns to the centres which allows Cooper Vuna to shift to the wing spot left vacant by McManus.

Dan Tolar also returns at prop, pushing Antonio Kaufusi to the bench, while youngster Con Mika has earned a starting spot in the second row, pushing Cameron Ciraldo to the bench. Wes Naiqama is also on the reserves list, which currently comprises six.

Manly were impressive against the Wests Tigers last week, getting the job done and moving up to fifth on the ladder. If the three teams above them lose before Monday, they could potentially jump as high as second with a win; but more importantly a loss could drop them back to eighth. They are well aware they need at least two more wins in the run home to be in the mix for finals and they want them sooner rather than later so they can put an assault on a top-four berth and a home final.
