New Zealand's 18-16 win on that memorable day was in many people's eyes the clash of the year. It was a real success story for the global game. Now it is the turn of the Wallabies to enter the Limerick cauldron and it will be interesting to see how they cope against a strong-looking back-line.

made 31 saves as Boston won 4-1 in New Jersey on Oct. 16.Second of four meetings this season. Jordan Caron scored his first NHL goal and Tim Thomas. Thomas is no longer undefeated, though the blame for Saturday’s 2-0 home loss to Ottawa could hardly be placed on his shoulders. He turned in another 31-save effort and continues to lead the League with a .957 save percentage, while his 1.45 goals-against average is second. New Jersey, meanwhile, will attempt to string together consecutive wins for the first time this season.

How bad had it been going for sniper Ilya Kovalchuk? He was sitting on seven-straight games without a goal. His 3 goals for the season were as many as New Jersey rookie defenseman Matt Taormina. And his flubbed shootout attempt to end a loss to Buffalo on Wednesday became an instant blooper reel classic. But Kovalchuk ended several weeks of frustration and the Devils’ 0-5-2 start on home ice with a power-play goal in overtime Friday for a 4-3 win over the Oilers.

Thomas is tied for the League lead with three shutouts, but on Saturday night it was Ottawa goalie Brian Elliott who was flawless, turning aside all 31 shots Boston fired his way. Thomas did everything he could to hold the Bruins in the game, but Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson scored midway through the first period and captain Daniel Alfredsson added an insurance goal in the third.

Revenge will most definitely be in the air this Saturday when the wounded Wallabies arrive at HQ looking to retain the Cook Cup on English soil.

Once again in this fixture, the scrum becomes the pre-game focal point as Wales were the latest nation to get the better of the outfit donning Gold.

So why did the Wallaby trio hold up well in the Tri-Nations and not in Cardiff? Well the second Test of the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour is a good yardstick to go off, as Matthew Rees and Adam Jones' inclusion certainly made more of an impact than Lee Mears and Phil Vickery did.

Like Wales, England were also strong up front against their opening southern opponents, and that doesn't bode well for the Wallabies. However, this week Martin Johnson has opted not to stick with the out-and-out bulk of Steve Thompson alongside Dan Cole and Andrew Sheridan, who all put in impressive set-piece performances against the All Blacks. Instead he rewards Dylan Hartley for his abrasive spell in the second-half. Some say he should be banned following an act on Richie McCaw...I leave to you to be the judge.

Hartley is the only change to the starting line-up made by Johnson while lock Simon Shaw takes the place of Dave Attwood in the number 18 jersey. The Wallabies meanwhile have gone for all but one of the XV that escaped the Millennium Stadium with an efficient win.

Then it was over to Welford Road on Tuesday with Robbie Deans admitting in the post-match he was impressed by that pack, but it cannot be downplayed just how the scrum could affect how things pan out on Saturday. We have witnessed in the past that English rugby's HQ is buzzing when their eight is moving forward so Australia must step up to the plate if they are to allow Quade Cooper decent ball upon which to work his magic.

Another man enjoying his rugby at present is Kurtley Beale. It seems strange to label it as a 'second coming' as he is still only 21, but the Waratahs full-back has found something he didn't have when he was thrown into the mix for his franchise back in 2007. Pace to burn and an eye for what is going on around him nowadays, he has also attracted praise from his own team-mate Drew Mitchell who is loving Beale's 'instinctive' mindset.

Maybe he is the missing piece of the jigsaw for Australia, a squad that is developing into serious World Cup contenders ahead of next year. A further boost is a favourable draw as - going on form - they should avoid both New Zealand and South Africa until the big finale.

England also cannot be written off in 2011 if we are to study recent improved performances - last week's effort proving that June 19's victory in Sydney was no fluke. Despite this, Australia go into Saturday's game as favourites with the bookies and one would have to agree rightly so. But whether they can front up at scrum-time and go some way better than their humiliation in Cardiff is the aching doubt. We all know they have the answers wider out.

Last week may have been a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the 2010 Four Nations final – but don’t get a shock if Saturday night comes and goes and we all discover someone re-wrote the story in the week since.

The Kangaroos were clinical and gutsy in disposing of the Kiwis in front of a hostile crowd of 44,000 in Auckland last Saturday and as such deserve favouritism to retain their Four Nations crown. But more than a few things went wrong for the World Champions, who looked one-dimensional and tentative for much of the evening before Benji Marshall hit the afterburners to put some respectability back into the score line. (And with time elapsing, who’s to say they wouldn’t have gotten even closer had the contest continued?)

After a bunch of experimentation and speculation, the nitty gritty of the business end of the tournament sees both sides settle on their strongest outfits – and for the Kangaroos that means a reluctant goodbye (possibly forever?) to 44-Test stalwart Petero Civoniceva, who personally relinquished his bench spot due to some sluggish, weary form.

Fullback Billy Slater, centre Willie Tonga, second-rower Luke Lewis (man of the match against England) and bench player Kurt Gidley return after a week’s rest. Lewis pushes Greg Bird, who was forceful last week (142 metres, five tackle-breaks, two offloads and a line-break) onto the bench, while Nate Myles is coach Tim Sheens’ replacement for Civoniceva.

Meanwhile Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney has elevated Greg Eastwood to his starting side, pushing Frank-Paul Nuuausala to the pine, while Sika Manu has lost his place in the top 17, with the Raiders’ Bronson Harrison to start in the second row (makes some sense given the Kangaroos’ Canberra connection of Dave Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs). Also, after a week’s rest, young Penrith prop Sam McKendry returns to the fold on the bench. Frank Pritchard was unavailable due to injury.

Waikato claimed a mighty win over Canterbury two weeks ago, but on home turf and with a final to be won it will be a much different contest at AMI Stadium on Friday.

Since both sides are in the final, they are obviously in good nick and have been for most of the season. Canterbury has won five of its last six, with the only reverse coming against Waikato a couple of weeks ago, and it was a surprisingly heavy one. They beat up on Wellington in the semi, setting a hot pace from the outset and, aided by some remarkable goal-kicking from Colin Slade (11 from 11) pulled steadily away. Although Wellington scored more than 40 points, the Lions were always chasing the game and, after drawing to within a couple of points with 10 minutes to play, were put away by a couple of late Caterbury tries. Waikato, on the other hand, had to mount a big comeback to win their sixth straight and claim the other place in the big match. In a contest where neither side had established a big advantage, Waikato was asked to score ten points in as many minutes to get over the line and managed to do it, with a try after the final siren and the conversion by Trent Renata supplying the vital score with no time left.

Several lesser lights have had big seasons for these two teams and a few of the bigger names have also been good for the whole year. On the Canterbury side fewer things would have pleased Rob Penney more than the development of Luke Romano into a high-class provincial lock while Peter Borlase has got through a lot of work in the front row and has seldom been bested. Slade kicked like a charm last week and will finish as second-highest scorer on the year despite missing a couple of matches while Robbie Fruean and first-year man Telusa Veainu are both chances to claim the try-scoring crown outright. Nathan White has been outstanding as captain and player for Waikato and his scrummaging has been a feature in the last couple of weeks. Jack Lam has worked hard all season and can never be faulted for effort or willingness to take the hits. Trent Renata got it right off the tee when it really counted last week after a few early misses and outside him Jackson Willison is often a quiet achiever – not noticed until he has sliced a backline open. Sosene Anesi is another who has stepped it up in the last couple of weeks and could be one of the more dangerous men on the pitch this Friday.
